We welcome and accept all into our church family and invite them to join us as we serve God and experience the love of Jesus Christ. Adopted by the Administrative Board October, 2005
The faith community of the First United Methodist Church has been a spiritual presence in this community all the way back to the pioneering days of the mid-1800s when Jason Lee preached the first Methodist sermon in the Northwest at Fort Vancouver. Though we have been housed in three different church buildings throughout the years, the same pioneering spirit and love for God runs through our congregation. Just as a church is more than a building, our congregation has long recognized that a healthy church has an important role to play in the larger community. While other churches have flocked to the suburbs to catch the latest pockets of growth, First Church remains a downtown church. In doing so, it has become a regional church, drawing members from the larger Vancouver area. We remain connected to and committed in ministry with downtown Vancouver.
Recognizing that God calls us to discipleship, First Church has a dual emphasis in its ministry of education and service. We have an excellent educational program for people of all ages, with special groups for youth, young adults, and the older members of our community. We are also actively supportive of several ministries serving the homeless and less fortunate in the Vancouver area, as well as international projects in the Philippines, Costa Rica and Zimbabwe.
Just as we reflect on our 150-plus years of ministry in the Vancouver area, we look forward
to new challenges and opportunities to do God's good work in the world. |
