At Vancouver First, we believe that engaging your mind is an important step on our Christian journey. Most classes are located on our lower level. Please check the bulletin or the sign in the lower lobby for class locations. Our current offerings are found below.
Activity Time (kindergarten and younger) – Any child, kindergarten and younger, is welcome to come by and participate in games, crafts, and stories. We look forward to seeing you there!
(preschool–5th grade) – Sundays at 10:10 a.m.
Once fully committed with at least 16 volunteers (allowing for a rotation), two classes of Children’s Sunday School will form, divided by grades Pre-K through 2nd in one class and 3rd through 5th in the other. After Children’s Moments in the Sunday morning service (about 10:10am or so), the younger children will meet in the kindergarten room downstairs and be led to class by the volunteers. The older children will do the same but go to the “Junior High Room” located at the end of the hall downstairs. Both classrooms will contain the necessary materials needed for the lesson and activities of that day’s classes.
(6th-12th grade)– Justin Nutting and a rotating volunteer will offer Youth Sunday School for those in grades 6th through 12th in the Youth Room every Sunday at 9:00am.
Seekers Class – September 25 @ 9:00am ~ Hesseltine Hall
The Seekers Class continues to meet on Sunday mornings (9:00am), and uses contemporary as well as classic books and video discussions to study the Bible and apply teachings to personal faith. This class provides a place for open discussion and debate of a variety of spiritual topics.
We will be starting a new book “Convictions: A Manifesto for progressive Christians” by Marcus Borg. This is a book published just before his untimely passing. ‘In this book he sets out his deepest convictions about God, Jesus and the Bible, and reveals how a series of mystical experiences helped to make him a world champion of progressive, inclusive, and politically engaged Christianity. Each chapter in this powerful book is shot through with moving stories of his intellectual and spiritual journey.’ Books will be available in the class.
Scriptures with Jim & Carol McGinnis ~ Sunday mornings, starting September 25 @ 9:00am ~ Bethel Room
The first six Sunday school sessions will follow the Cokesbury curriculum, Kay Arthur and Mark Sheldrake, Ignite Your Passion for God.
This will be the start of something good, a new thing for God’s Kingdom!

Lesson 3 ~ October 9, 2016
Solomon follows his wives to worship idols and foreign gods, which angers the One True Lord God Almighty. God promises to split the Kingdom of Israel and take all but the Tribe of Judah in Jerusalem away from Solomon’s son as divine response to Solomon’s sin. 1 Kings 11:1-11.
Lesson 4 ~ October 16, 2016
God announces his Ten Commandments; Idol worship is forbidden by God. What idols distract us from our God? Exodus 20:1-6
Lesson 5, Sunday, October 23rd, 2016
God teaches the Israelites to choose obedience to God laws and statutes so they may live long in the land. Deuteronomy 30:15-20.
Lesson 6 ~ October 30, 2016
Jesus Christ teaches the Greatest Commandment – “Hear, O Israel! The LORD our God the LORD is one; and you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” Mark 12:28-34.
From Pastor Jim McGinnis ~ It takes only a spark by the Holy Spirit to get a fire going!
“Sparks” is a study on The Theology and Spiritual Practices of John Wesley. As an integral part of the completion of my Doctor of Ministry, I have prepared a curriculum devoted to the spiritual practices. Renewing and refreshing our closeness to the Holy can be the Spark that gives us a great sense of renewed leadership in our church. I prayerfully request your support and participation. We will learn and experience spiritual practices that will enrich our prayer and devotional lives. The study will lead us through a conversation on the spiritual life beginning on October 19th. Two meeting times are available in the Conrad Room on these Wednesday afternoons, 4:00-5:30pm or 6:00-7:30pm.
