This is out last week of our series Glimmers in the Darkness, but of course as people of faith we are looking for God's light in the world and pointing it out whenever we can! This Sunday we celebrate Christ's baptism. This is an incredible holy moment where Jesus is anointed publicly and begins his ministry. Those of us who have been baptized join with Christ in this amazing acknowledgement of God at work in us, a work that is happening in all people from birth. Baptism is the moment of initiation into the faith. It’s when we publicly declare that we recognize God at work in us or in our child. This Sunday we will remember our baptisms, and claim God’s love of us baptized or not.
This ritual is a means of grace, a sacrament that reminds us that we are claimed by God and that we claim God right back. This rite sustains us as we walk into the new year, ready to shine for Christ.
