How Do You Find Me?

How Do You Find Me?

A note from Pastor Eilidh

How do you find me?  The best ways to get a hold of me are to email me or text me.  My email is pastoreilidh@gmail.com and my cell phone is 541-654-1876.  I am off on Fridays and Saturdays so I will most likely not respond on those days unless it is an urgent matter or a really funny text. I will be in the office on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am -3pm. Feel free to drop by or reach out for an appointment during my office hours.  On Wednesdays I will be working from home.  Our address is 4465 SW 91st Ave, Portland, OR 97225.  We were thrilled to be able to purchase a place this spring that beautifully accommodates both my husband and I as well as my mother-in-law (Molo) and still has space for our daughter when she finally makes it home on break from college. The nice thing is that the home is located just a 10 minute drive from Tigard UMC where my husband serves and near where my father-in-law (Dadlow) lives in a care home.  When there is no traffic I can make it to our church in about 20 minutes. Most mornings it takes me more like 25, which is just enough time for some good audio book or podcast listening.  Our backyard is a haven for birds and bunnies, full of trees and flowers lovingly tended by the woman who lived there before us. It's a great place to renew and rest, so most Sunday afternoons you will find me napping in the hammock!

July's Climate Change Group Action Plan

July's Climate Change Group Action Plan

Zero Waste in the Home

Week 1

  • Get rid of unwanted junk mail. Register to receive less at dmachoice.org, optoutprescreen.com and catalogchoice.org.
  • Refuse: things you don’t really need like freebies at conferences, parties or the dentist office. Refuse plastic and buy items in glass, metal or cardboard.

Week 2

  • Bring your own: coffee cup, water bottle, take out container, grocery and produce bags, reusable cultery and stainless steel straws to cut down on waste.
  • Go reusable: ditch paper towels for cloth rags, switch out paper plates and napkins for reusable ones and handkerchiefs instead of tissues.

Week 3

  • Buy in bulk: bring your own containers, tare them at the service desk and fill them up in the bulk section at the grocery store to avoid unnecessary packaging.
  • Buy used or second hand items at thrift stores or consignment stores. Find local buy/sell/trade groups like the Facebook group Buy Nothing, Give and Take or Freecycle.com.

Week 4

  • Compost: find a compost system that works in your home or sign up for a compost service.
  • Plan your meals to avoid unnecessary purchases at the store and food waste.
  • Move toward a plant based diet- you can find most produce with out packaging at grocery stores.

Bonus Action: Introduce your work or church to the zero waste lifestyle!

A Thank You Note

A Thank You Note

From Caitlin Smith

Dear Vanfumc Church,

Thank you so much for your continued donations of clothing and Walmart gift cards. Both of these items truly make a meaningful difference in the lives of our newcomer families.

Since many families are now living near a Walmart, your gift cards have allowed them to purchase the items they truly need. As you know, moving into a new apartment—especially when starting from scratch—can be incredibly expensive.
Your support eases that burden in a tangible way.

The donated clothing has been taken to our warehouse, where families have been able to come and "shop" for items in their size. Whether new or gently used, the high-quality condition of the clothing maintains a sense of dignity and honor, allowing each person to find what works best for them.

We are truly grateful for the community you are building by showing care and compassion to these families. Your generosity is a beautiful reflection of what it means to welcome others.

We’ve recently learned that we are expecting more families before the end of September. If you’re interested in learning more about ways to volunteer or directly support these families, please don’t hesitate to reach out—I’d be happy to connect you with the right department within our agency.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to let me know. Otherwise, thank you again for being part of this effort, and let’s continue building a strong and welcoming community together.

Warmly,

Caitlin Smith and the PC refugee resetlement team
