If Not This, Then What?

If Not This, Then What?

A Note From Pastor Eilidh

Mary Lookingbill and I have been busy plotting, planning, creating spreadsheets, and thinking prayerfully about the gifts and graces of the people of this congregation.  We've been pulling in other folks to these conversations to help us dream of how we can best respond to what God is doing here and now with us. So don't be too surprised if an invitation comes to join in on a team or with a shift as an office angel or a Sunday instructing our children. To any request, we ask for a thoughtful response.  Please never say yes because you feel like you SHOULD. We have a need for lots of volunteers in order to faithfully follow God's call for us. So if the current opportunity isn't the right one, say no. There will be other things. And if you know how God is calling you to serve right now, please come chat with Mary or me. God speaks in community, and we need to hear what is stirring in your heart!

We are currently looking for folks to teach Sunday School, cover in the office for lunch breaks and on Mondays, and serve on our committees. So please pray over these opportunities that God might draw forward the right people for these roles. And pray that God reveals how you are called to serve in this season!

A Musical Note From Martin

I am so excited to have our newest hymnal supplement, WORSHIP & SONG in our pews for us to use and learn together.  My director book has made its way to my studio organ so that I can start learning the hymns and songs along with all of you!  I think you'll find this includes some tried and true contemporary favorites as well as some great news texts using familiar tunes that we already know.  Stay tuned for our soup pitch in and introduction event where we will try some of these new songs together.

This fall we are studying the Message of Jesus by Adam Hamilton. This is a six-week study that explores six of the most important themes in Jesus’s teachings, why they matter, and how they speak to us today.

Beginning on October 20th we will be discussing Inspired by Rachel Held Evans.

Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again by Rachel Held Evans is a fresh, honest look at the Bible—what it is, what it isn’t, and how it can still speak to us today.

Evans explores questions many wrestle with:

  • If the Bible is supposed to explain life, why does it raise so many questions?

  • What does it really mean to be “inspired” or “chosen by God”?

  • Why has the Bible been used both to liberate and to oppress?

Blending memoir, poetry, short stories, and creative retellings of Scripture, Evans approaches the Bible not as a science book or rulebook, but as a living, breathing text—complex, human, and sacred. She embraces its contradictions and invites readers to engage it with curiosity, doubt, and imagination.

For anyone who has struggled with the Bible or is learning to love it again, Inspired offers a hopeful, thought-provoking path forward.

All are welcome to attend.

“The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it; the world and all who dwell therein.”

(Psalm 24:1)

Decaying food (process minus oxygen) in landfills produces methane – a powerful greenhouse gas, 84 times more damaging than carbon dioxide. Solution? Compost that food! Composting ads in oxygen to the process and produces nutrient rich soil. Compost added to the gardens retain water, produces healthier plants and can even pull carbon dioxide out of the air (a process called carbon sequestration)! It’s Earth’s finest form of recycling.

For more information and resources, see below.

Let's Keep In Touch!

Do you like to email? Is texting your jam?  Do you appreciate phone calls?  Do you like getting information in the mail?  We are in the process of a communications overhaul and want to make sure we are communicating in ways that work for you!  In the coming weeks we'll have copies of our current directories available for you to double check the info. We will be communicating via email, using a new app that allows us to text, through announcements in worship, by updating our website, and with posts on social media. We will also be sending things out with the help of the postal service.  We want to make sure we are all connected and aware of the celebrations, progress, and needs of our community.

Thank you for your patience as we get new systems up and running!

Blessings,

Pastor Eilidh
